Before digital cameras came along, you had to set your "F stop" to the proper setting to have the right exposure for your photos. There was a saying among photojournalists: "F8 and be there."--set your camera to F8, and get to the scene ready to go. Not that much has changed, really.

Welcome to the Observer's Photo Blog

Truth be told, I wanted to be a photojournalist when I grew up.

Quotes

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough."

"The pictures are there, and you just take them."

First iPhone Pics

My neighbor was having tree work done. Definitely a photo opportunity! (Yes, there's a guy up in the tree.)

My neighbor had to cut down this 40 year old evergreen, alas.

Cats! Always great subjects for photos--especially sleeping cats...

Leawood police car outside Leawood City Hall looks like a recruiting brochure for the force.

I have always wanted to photograph this art near the Leawood City Hall. Note the moon up in the twilight sky, and the slightly reddish tint to the sky.

Pitfalls--yes. Holding it steady is a little harder, as this shot of my neighbor's organized wreaths in his garage shows. Other pitfalls have included poor focus and getting my fingers in the lens, which is in a very different spot than I am used to!

Extra Fluffly

Just wait until I find out who put the extra conditioner in the shampoo!

Dangerous BoyCat

Something startled both the BoyCat and the SmallFry. They went flying in opposite directions, claws out, hair up. BoyCat, flat of fur ordinarily, is a sight to behold when his hair is up. I snapped this picture, disappointed his bottlebrush tail did not show up well.

When I pulled it up on the big screen, and beheld the hackles raised, the pools of blackness in his hazel eyes, the posture ready for defense and attack, I realized once again that I share my house with small fierce animals we call "cats."

Just Another Day at the Cat House

Hadn't posted here for a while--have a lot of material. Here's something new to look at from the endless collection of cat photos. Taken with the Blackberry.

Playing Catch

All my cats except my elderly LadyCat like to chase and catch things. So we had a throw and chase session this afternoon after the NFL game got out of hand. They were much more entertaining than that blow out game!

I discovered that if I clicked the electronic shutter about the same time I threw the toy, I got pretty good results.

This is pretty good--just a little bit higher frame and it would have been awesome! She looks like a wide receiver stretching for a catch!

BoyCat likes the fake mousies.

Yes, my GirlCat has bigger than usual feet.

I took more cats catching balls pictures and put them on SKC Observer--here's a link:

Cat Pals

My preteen kitten and my young adult cat get along very well. Here is just a sample of their cuteness together.

Kitten Post

BoyCat and Small Fry. Small Fry was what this slightly fluffy kitten was called for three weeks after I took her in when she was found stray at the McD's at Minor and Holmes. She has a proper name now. She loves the BoyCat and plays with him all the time. He appears to love playing with her, and it has brought out his inner kitten. So cute to watch them play together! She chases his tail and bounces off him regularly.

A Couple of Weeks of Cell Phone Photos

Train at the crossing. I keep trying for the perfect train photo!

The neighbor's surprise lilies--so called because they just spring up and bloom. They have no associated greenery with them. It's been a good year for surprise lilies--they've been popping up all over!

Dozing BoyCat--so good to have him back healthy again.

No more ugly detour signs! Interchange to I-435 West is open again! (Yeah, poor quality photo, as I used the zoom function, but I am so glad to get this interchange back, I just want to celebrate!)

This display of, ahem, condoms caught my eye the other day with this juxtaposition of labels

1963 Chrysler 300J convertible exterior...

...and interior. I must say, this is one of the best interior shots I've ever gotten!

I had the chance to play with the kittens at the Ward Parkway PetsMart as a volunteer with Tara Animal Rescue was doing some cleaning. These are just a few of the cute photos I was able to take.

Note the little orange Photobomber!

Washing Up

Here's my GirlCat, washing up, probably after the evening mushy noms.

Hi There...

The female felines of my household have been a little unrepresented lately here. Here's LadyCat, looking over at me. Ready listener or expecting services?

Boycat, Ladycat and Girlcat

Boycat, adopted from a rescue group.
Ladycat, taken in as a stray. She's in her teens.
Girlcat, adopted from my vet's office. Yes, she has more than the usual number of kitty toes.

Hat tip to Ann T. for the monikers.
Yes, Boycat is the Observer Kitty!

These pictures are some of many of my three cats that were shot at low resolution. They are best shared in these postage stamp sizes for that reason. You can click on the photos to see them in a bigger size. Use the back button to return.
