Before digital cameras came along, you had to set your "F stop" to the proper setting to have the right exposure for your photos. There was a saying among photojournalists: "F8 and be there."--set your camera to F8, and get to the scene ready to go. Not that much has changed, really.

Welcome to the Observer's Photo Blog

Truth be told, I wanted to be a photojournalist when I grew up.

Quotes

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough."

"The pictures are there, and you just take them."

Showers of Blessings

68 photos went to Facebook from the NWLC so I could post a link for them. It is a bounty of the good, bad and ugly.

This photo, taken Tuesday night during Matt Redman's set features the wrap around visual they started using--it wrapped around the platform and on to the walls. This photo shows a tiny bit of the band, praise hands and the graphic, with the lyrics. It was amazing looking, without being so overpowering that it became about the graphic.

The photo was taken in color, but I pulled the color out in the "dark" room.

Easter Sunday Worship

It was almost completely dark except for the cross illuminated in red and red letters: "Three days later..." You can see the hint of light starting as Pastor Shoup and the acolyte start lighting candles. By the time they make their way to the Christ candle, it is brightly lit throughout the sanctuary, including the congregation, bathed in yellow light.

Christ has risen.

A Crook's Worst Nightmare

If you are a bad guy trying to get away from the police, there are two sounds you don't want to hear:
Strange sounding words followed by barking and the sound of pounding paws as the police dog comes to get you.

The chop-chop sound of the police helicopter overhead.

The Kansas City Police Department demo'ed both these crime fighting tools at the Red Bridge Festival today. I hope you were out and about in this very special weather for October. The weather geeks on KSHB reminded us it was 55 and rainy last year at this time!

Leading Worship

I thought this was a pretty good photo of COR's Minister of Contemporary Worship Lance Winkler leading worship Sunday evening.

Answering Questions

I shot this with my cellphone for a story on the Red Bridge Road project open house. I love the symmetry of this picture. The low, balding head belongs to a man with dwarfism.

Mounted Patrol II

A more classic shot of the two mounted KCPD officers at the soccer game yesterday...

Mounted Patrol I

Almost a perfect PR shot for these horse mounted KCPD members...can you see what makes it less than perfect? (No, the photog's shadow isn't it!)
