Before digital cameras came along, you had to set your "F stop" to the proper setting to have the right exposure for your photos. There was a saying among photojournalists: "F8 and be there."--set your camera to F8, and get to the scene ready to go. Not that much has changed, really.

Welcome to the Observer's Photo Blog

Truth be told, I wanted to be a photojournalist when I grew up.

Quotes

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough."

"The pictures are there, and you just take them."

Wayside Waifs: May 14

I hadn't visited the animal shelter Wayside Waifs for a little while, so I decided it was time. I love going and petting and playing with the cats, who love attention, and getting my dog fix (I do like dogs--at this point I really like Other People's Dogs the best).

I found at the shelter among the animals there that day...

Two very lazy orange tabby cats...

One playful buff orange kitty...

And one pug. This lovely lady came to the shelter as a stray...if only dogs could talk.

I would wager that the pug is adopted and all the kitties are still available. To check out available animals ahead of time, visit www.waysidewaifs.org.

Dedicated to Ann T's BoyCat

A shelter kitty, Pepe, models "the cone of shame" in this photo taken in February. Pepe was freed from the cone the next week and was adopted out in about a month.

Blogger bud Ann T's male cat ate 24 pony tail holders and one rubber band thus causing himself to need surgery and he has been sporting the cone at home. Poor BoyCat! Get Well Soon!

Peony

My Peony is rather tardy; this is my neighbor's. Even though their plant has started to bloom, there are plenty of buds to go. Looks like a good year for Peonies!

Answering Questions

I shot this with my cellphone for a story on the Red Bridge Road project open house. I love the symmetry of this picture. The low, balding head belongs to a man with dwarfism.

Contesting for the Ball

Moving Up the Field

I was really too far away to get great pics, but with zoom and a little help from the software, I got a few good ones.

These Buds For You!

It won't be long before these Iris and Peone buds are ready to open.

Mounted Patrol II

A more classic shot of the two mounted KCPD officers at the soccer game yesterday...

Mounted Patrol I

Almost a perfect PR shot for these horse mounted KCPD members...can you see what makes it less than perfect? (No, the photog's shadow isn't it!)

Series: Clouds

After church finished yesterday, we came out and found the most amazing cloud formations.

Cumulus clouds with high tops, highlighted by the low sun in the west. (South view)

Rain shafts are visible in these clouds, and I could hear very rare rumbles of thunder. (SW view)

Poofy clouds as far as the eye can see. (North view. Yeah, it's not exactly hill country around here.)

Check out the blue underneath the cloud deck here. (south view)

Blue under the cloud anvil here, too. (south view)

A very distinct line set up between the storm and clear sunny weather. (WSW view)

More cumulus clouds, with high tops. (East view)

Later on, storms developed from the south and moved into Cass County MO in the extreme south metro, and a strong line developed along I-70 to the north. Not much rain at my house, but excellent light shows!
