Before digital cameras came along, you had to set your "F stop" to the proper setting to have the right exposure for your photos. There was a saying among photojournalists: "F8 and be there."--set your camera to F8, and get to the scene ready to go. Not that much has changed, really.

Welcome to the Observer's Photo Blog

Truth be told, I wanted to be a photojournalist when I grew up.

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough."

"The pictures are there, and you just take them."

High School Hoops Are Back!

Took in my first high school basketball game of 2010-11 (instead of the SOTU speech--bad blogger!) on Tuesday night, Ruskin HS entertaining Lee's Summit West.

The crowd holds up their hands in anticipation of a made free throw. This is late in the game when the LS West Titans were fouling to get the ball back. Winning teams make their foul shots! An experimental photo--a SLR would have probably been able to make more difference between the shooter and the crowd in terms of focus, throwing the player more out of focus--but I like the way it came out here pretty well.

Coaching'em up. I was right behind the Ruskin bench to get this shot. It is cropped but not by much. Love it!

West defender meets Ruskin offense.

This is what a stall looks like. Ruskin went into a four corners type offense for a little bit after needing to recover from losing a 10 point lead to West's crazy good three point shooter--he was 5-5 at one point!

Best action shot of the night. I was trying to remember if the ref called a foul--that sure looks like a foul what with #24's thumb wrapped around the shooter's arm.

Love, love, love shooting sports, I do, I do!

Playing Catch

All my cats except my elderly LadyCat like to chase and catch things. So we had a throw and chase session this afternoon after the NFL game got out of hand. They were much more entertaining than that blow out game!

I discovered that if I clicked the electronic shutter about the same time I threw the toy, I got pretty good results.

This is pretty good--just a little bit higher frame and it would have been awesome! She looks like a wide receiver stretching for a catch!

BoyCat likes the fake mousies.

Yes, my GirlCat has bigger than usual feet.

I took more cats catching balls pictures and put them on SKC Observer--here's a link:

Wayside Waifs January 7, 2011

Wayside Waifs is having a special event to celebrate the Chiefs playoff game this Sunday. Adoption fees have been cut in half. Lots of cute puppies, dogs, kittens and cats available. Some are named after Chiefs players and cheerleaders. Check it out.

These two guys were labelled Weimaraner/Poodle mixes. I wonder what they'll look like when they grow up?

Matt Cassel huddles up with teammates.

If I remember correctly this ball of fluff was named Brian Waters.

And this is Todd Haley.

These two five month old male cats are off to the vets for last check up before leaving for their new home!

Two epically cute red and white kittens.

Such pretty markings and wonderful green eyes--and funny nonchalant pose!

Wayside Waifs is in south Kansas City at 3901 Martha Truman Drive. On the web at www.waysidewaifs.org.

Locomotive Power

This was one of four diesel locomotives pulling a freight train through the Red Bridge Road crossing this afternoon. I was there shooting photos documenting the progress of the new bridge but couldn't resist the chance to try again for the "ultimate train picture."
